Japanese Fan Art

‘Fan art” as in I am a big fan of many things Japanese. NOT as in I actually paint fans (someone asked me that once).

I am an outsider looking wistfully in at a culture rich in handmade excellence, folklore and so many things kawaii.

Boro, kokeshi, koi and maneki neko are just some of what I’m drawn to as I learn about bits and pieces of this culture I’m fascinated with.

This series was originally designed to be ongoing. Each piece was created on 6 inch by 6 inch cradle board. It could be displayed as a single piece or as part of a grid. Strong enough to stand alone but able to harmonize with the group. Sadly, I didn’t document every piece in this series so have lost track of many. At the time this series was selling, my focus was fixed on keeping the display grid in balance as I created fresh unique pieces to replace sold ones.
